sea anemone A typically solitary, marine cnidarian (order Actiniaria) with a cylindrical body attached at its base to a substrate, and bearing a circle of tentacles at the top around its mouth. Approximately 800 species are known, some of which form colonies. Sea anemones are found from the inter-tidal zone to the abyssal depths.
