sulfonation





The introduction of a sulfonic acid group, –SO3H, into an organic molecule, where R is a hydrocarbon group. Sufonation is widely used in the manufacture of dyes, sulfonamide drugs, and so on. Many detergents are manufactured by sulfonation of a hydrocarbon.
