sulfur dioxide (SO2)



A colorless, pungent, poisonous gas which dissolves in water to give a mixture of sulfuric and sulfurous acids. Sulfur dioxide is used in the contact process to manufacture sulfuric acid and as a refrigerant, bleaching agent, and preservative.
