temperature minimum (solar) A level in the Sun's atmosphere, about 550 km above the base of the photosphere, where the temperature reaches a lowest point of 4,400 K. Above this level, to a height of about 1,000, the temperature rises steadily to about 6,000 K, then more rapidly at greater heights.
