    tetraktys

The sum 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 (the fourth triangular number), held in reverence by the Pythagoreans (see Pythagoras). The tetraktys, or "holyfourfoldness," was taken to represent the four classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
