travertine

Compact, banded limestone, usually light-colored, evaporated or deposited from hot springs; sometimes also applied to stalactites and stalagmites. Taking a high polish, it is used for interior decoration. Tufa, or calcareous sinter, is a porous equivalent that may rapidly encrust small growing plants or may contain embedded sediment grains and pebbles.
