Welch, William ("Jack")
William Welch was vice-president of the SETI Institute and Professor of Astronomy and Electrical Engineering and holder of the Watson and Marilyn Alberts Chair for SETI at the University of California, Berkeley. Welch earned a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at Berkeley in 1960 and, as director of the Radio Astronomy Laboratory there from 1971 to 1996, was the key figure in setting up the BIMA (Berkeley-Illinois-Maryland Association) Array. Among his current activities is supervising the construction of the Allen Telescope Array. He is married to another leading SETI researcher, Jill Tarter.
