Welles, (George) Orson (1915–1985)

Orson Welles was an American film director and actor who made his acting debut in Ireland (1931), before returning to the U.S. to become a radio producer (1934). In 1938, his Mercury Theater put on a radio production of H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds that was so convincing it plunged the nation into panic.
