countertenor

Countertenor is an extremely high and rare male voice that is produced largely by resonances in the head. The countertenor range extends approximately from the F below middle C to the second F above middle C. Some countertenors vibrate their vocal folds in the same way as normal singers, but the folds are stretched and thinner. This type of voice was very popular until the end of the 18th century.
