tremolo

Tremolo is rapid modulation of a sustained tone (or chord) by a regular, rapid, shallow wavering in its volume. Not to be confused with vibrato which involves modulation of the pitch.

The so-called tremolo arm (whammy bar) on an electric guitar is thus a misnomer; it should really be called a vibrato bar.
