bench vise

bench vise
A stationary vise (spelled "vice" in the UK) with two sets of jaws: one to hold flat work and another to hold round work, such as pipe. Some bench vises have swivel bases so that they can be turned in any horizontal direction.

A carpenter's bench vise is a more or less integral part of the bench. The jaws are made of wood, plastic, or metal faced with wood to avoid marring the work piece. By contrast an metalworker's or engineer's bench vise is bolted onto the top of the bench and has metal jaws.
