Actium, Battle of

The battle, in 31 B.C., in which Octavian (later the Emperor Augustus) achieved a decisive victory over the forces of Anthony and Cleopatra off the coast of northwest Greece. It traditionally marks the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Roman Empire.
