annulet

An annulet is a flat band that encircles the capital of a Doric column several times. It is also a flat molding which is common to parts of columns, particularly in the bases and capitals.

In heraldry, an annulet is the representation of a ring on an escutcheon. It was originally meant to be the symbol of nobility, and was sometimes used to indicate the fifth son.
