Second king of the Persian Empire. Upon the death of his father, Cyrus, in 529 BC Cambyses inherited the throne. He enlarged the Empire by conquering Egypt and Cyrenaica; but his expedition to conquer Ethiopia met with ill fortune. Cambyses died in 522 BC and was succeeded by Darius.
