Champollion,
Jean François (1790–1832)
French linguist and historian regarded as the "father of Egyptology." Professor
of history at Grenoble University (1809–1816), he was the first to
effectively decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics, a result of his research on
the Rosetta Stone.
