keep

The principal inner tower or chief stronghold of a castle, containing sufficient accommodation to serve as the main living-quarters permanently or during times of siege; also called a donjon. An early type of keep, rectangular in form, in which the great hall and private bed-chamber were placed side by side, is called a hall-keep.
