Zoser step pyramid.

A step pyramid is a tapering, stepped or terraced structure, usually terminating in a platform, e.g., that of Zoser at Saqqara near Cairo of c. 2770 BC, a mastaba heightened with five solid stories of decreasing size. It is to be distinguished from a pyramid, which has smoothly shaped sides rising to a point.
