A portamento is a mild glissando between two notes for an expressive effect. The instruction (from the Italian portare 'to carry') can be carried out by voice, a bowed instrument, or any other unfretted stringed instrument, and involves carrying on the tone from note to note, hence very legato and momentarily sounding the intervening pitches between any two indicated by the notation; the same effect is possible on the trombone.
