epoxide

Generic epoxide

A generic epoxide.

An epoxide is a compound that has a three-membered ring including oxygen in its molecular make-up. A example is the gas epoxyethane (ethylene oxide, C2H4O), which may be regarded as a cyclic ether. Polymerization of oxides with phenols produces epoxy resins, which are used as adhesives and electrical insulators.
