Zenobe Gramme

Zénobe Gramme was a Belgian engineer who developed the first practical dynamo in 1869. His knowledge of electrical theory was limited, but even so he developed an electric motor from his dynamo. He was one of a group of scientists who, in 1872, succeeded in transmitting direct current electricity over long distances.
