Veldt, or veld, is open grassland of South Africa. It is divided into three types: High Veldt, around 1,500 m above sea-level, which is similar to the prairies; Cape Middle Veldt, somewhat lower, covered with scrub and occasional low ridges of hills; and Low Veldt, under about 750 meters above sea-level.
