break

A break is a sudden shift in tone caused when excessive airflow overcomes the tension in the vocal folds, which causes the singer to lose the continuity and connection of tone production, as the vocal folds abduct (see abduction and adduction of vocal folds). This can be avoided if the folds are allowed to gradually thin and decrease in mass with a corresponding gradual decrease in airflow so excessive air pressure or muscle tension never gets a chance to build up.
