Female voice types and their approximate ranges.

There are three main female voice types. Starting with the highest they are:

  • soprano
  • mezzo-soprano
  • alto
  •

This simple classification doesn't take into account that voices differ greatly in weight and tone. For this reason, other terms are used to describe voice types within each grouping. For example, a soprano might be described as leggiero (light), dramatic (heavy and dark), or lyric (warm toned). Also, the range of an individual's voice may span more than one type. For example, many mezzo-sopranos can sing as high as sopranos. It's just that their voices sit naturally lower and they don't feel comfortable staying up as a high for so long. A person's voice type has a strong influence on the repertoire to which they are best suited.
