suspension

A suspension is a form of discord (see dissonance) arising from the holding over of a note in one chord as a momentary (discordant) part of the combination which follows, it being then resolved by falling a degree to a note which forms a real part of the second chord. A double suspension is the same as the above with two notes held over. See also suspended chord.
