coccolith



A round, chalky platelet, only one or two thousandths of a millimeter across, formed by a single-celled flagellate of the class Coccolithophorida – a class of algae of the phylum Chrysophyta. Many limestone and chalk cliffs are made up entirely of the remains of such platelets.
