collimator

an optical collimator with a bulb, an aperture (A), and a plano-convex lens (L).

A collimator is lens system used to produce a parallel or near parallel beam of light, subatomic particles, or other radiation. Light passing through a fine slit at the focus of a convex lens will be rendered parallel by the lens. A collimated beam is essential for many optical purposes.
