fur

Fur is the soft, dense hairy undercoat of certain mammals. Fur is an excellent heat insulator and protects against the cold of the northern regions where most fur-bearing animals are found. It is generally interspersed with guard hairs, longer and stiffer, that form a protective outer coat and prevent matting.
