    granulation

    granulation on the Sun
The mottled appearance of the surface of the Sun when seen at high spatial resolution; it is caused by hot gases rising from the solar interior. Granulation looks a bit like rice pudding, with individual bright "rice grains," known as granules, separated from each other by a connected network of dark paths called intergranular lanes.
