gum



A chemically complex sticky substance consisting mainly of various sugars bound to organic acids, exuded from some trees, shrubs, seeds, and seaweeds. Gum arabic is produced by the African tree Acacia senegal. Agar is a dried mucilaginous gum extracted from seaweeds.
