hydrostatics
The branch of fluid mechanics dealing with forces and pressures in stationary fluids, and their effects on bodies immersed in them. The concept of fluid pressure (a normal force per unit area acting across any surface in the fluid or at its boundary) enables problems of flotation, buoyancy, etc., to be treated.
