dip needle
A dip needle, as illustrated in a French textbook of 1874
Also known as a clinometer or dip needle, an instrument for measuring magnetic dip, consisting of a magnetic needle mounted free to pivot in the vertival plane with a graduated circle. For use, the instrument is carefully leveled and oreinted into the magnetic meridian.
