lagoon
A shallow, quiet waterway separated from the open sea by a bank or reef
crest. Lagoons are a common phenomenon in coral
reef areas (see also atoll). A lagoon may
also be formed when the sea throws up a barrier beach
at high tide. Haffs are lagoons created by a sandy spit
at a river mouth. Related category
