A metabolite is any substance that takes part in a metabolic reaction – a biochemical reaction in the body. For example, in the breakdown of glucose to produce energy, the metabolites are glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water. The term metabolite is sometimes used to refer only to the products of a metabolic reaction. see also metabolism.
