non-radial pulsation

A form of pulsation in which waves run in different directions on and beneath the surface of a star. Interaction between these waves results in phase shifts that can, in principle, be measured to yield information about stellar structure. Although this sort of work is currently only possible for the Sun, it will extend, as astroseismology develops, to include other stars.
