Perigal, Henry (1801–1898)

English amateur mathematician best known for his elegant dissection proof of Pythagoras's theorem, a diagram of which is carved on his gravestone. Perigal also discovered a number of other interesting geometrical dissections and, though employed modestly for much of his life as a stockbroker's clerk, was well known in British scientific society.
