Proust, Joseph Louis (1754–1826)
French chemist who specialized in analysis, with little interest in tehory.
As a result of his researches, however, he established the law of definite
proportions, or Proust's Law. This law states that the composition of chemical
compounds is proportionate regardless of the size of the sample. It is equivalent
to the law of constant composition.
