pair production

pair production
Pair production is the creation of an electron and a positron from a photon in a strong electric field, such as that of an atomic nucleus. Electrons and positrons are formed only when a photon has a high quantum energy since, on the basis of the mass-energy equivalence (E=mc2), they have a total mass of 16 × 10-14 J.
