The systematic examination of the sounds made in speech, concerned not only with the classification of these sounds but also with physical and physiological aspects of their production and transmission, and with their reception and interpretation by the listener. Phonology, the study of phonetic patterns in language, is of importance in comparative linguistics. Phonemics is the study of phonemes.
