plasmodesmata Extremely fine cytoplasmic threads one to a few tenths of a micrometer wide passing through the walls of living plant cells and connecting the cytoplasm of adjacent cells. Plasmodesmata (singular: plasmodesma) may be scattered, or grouped in the membrane of pits.
