pulse

The palpable impulse conducted in the arteries representing the transmitted beat of the heart. A normal pulse rate is between 68 and 80, but athletes may have slower pulses. Fever, heart disease, anoxia, and anxiety increase the rate. The pulse character may suggest specific conditions, loss of pulse possibly indicating arterial block or cessation of the heart.
