scintillation counter

A scintillation counter is an instrument for detecting ionizing radiation and measuring the activity of its source. A brief localized light flash is produced in a phosphor when ionizing radiation such as X-rays or protons is incident on it. In early counters, the flashes were counted directly using a microscope, but now they are converted into electric impulses by a photomultiplier and counted electronically.
