septum A thin dividing wall within or between parts of the body – e.g. the nasal septum is the cartilage and bony partition that separates the two nasal chambers (nostrils). In the heart, the atria (upper chambers) are separated by a partition known as the interatrial septum; the ventricles (lower chambers) are separated by the interventricular septum.
