solenoid

A device, used in circuit breakers, for producing a short lateral movement of a sliding iron core. This is attracted by the magnetic field produced when an electric current flows in one of the coils surrounding either end of the slider. The term solenoid is also used to described an elongated coil used to produce a region of uniform magnetic field.
