super-rotation

The rotation of a planet's atmosphere independent of the surface rotation. It is very marked in the case of Venus, where the top layer of the atmosphere rotates in 4 days compare with the 243 days of the surface. The cause of super-rotation remains unclear but is probably linked to the fact that most of the Sun's heat is absorbed by the top of the atmosphere.
