In science fiction, a directed force field of some kind that can pull on material objects at a distance ranging from feet to miles. Popularized by E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman novels, its use dates back to SF stories of the 1940s. Tractor beams are also produced by spacecraft in the Star Trek universe.
