terpentine An exudate obtained from injured pine trees. This is distilled to give the resin, rosin, and the essential oil, oil of turpentine (also known as turpentine). The chief constituent of oil of turpentine, used as a solvent and thinner for paints and varnishes, is pinene (see terpene).
