whooping cough

Also called pertussis, a bacterial disease of children causing upper respiratory symptoms with a characteristic whoop or inspiratory noise due to inflammation of the larynx. It is usually a relatively mild illness, except in the very young, but vaccination is widely practiced to prevent it.
