idiophone

An idiophone is a type of musical instrument, the sound of which is produced by vibration, without the use of strings or membranes – for example, by shaking or scraping. Most percussion instruments that are not drums are idiophones, including the marimba, maracas, wooden block, and triangle. Idiophones are one of several groups of instruments recognized in the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system.
