Ariosto, Ludovico (1474–1533)
Italian poet who, in 1532, wrote the epic poem Orlando Furioso. In it, one of the characters travels to the Moon in the divine chariot that carried the prophet Elijah in a whirlwind to Heaven (see voyages to the Moon). On his arrival, he finds the Moon well populated by civilized people (see life on the Moon).
