Bayliss, William Maddock (1860–1924)
English physiologist who, in collaboration with Ernest Henry Starling (1866–1927),
introduced the term hormone to describe
substances which, when secreted from one part of the body, have a specific
effect on another. In 1902 they discovered secretin,
one of the first hormones to be identified. Bayliss also introduced the
saline injection for cases of surgical shock
